According to the research, titled "Skin Pigmentation Diversity in Central East Indian Populations and its Correlation with Mitochondrial Haplogroups", which measured the melanin index of populations in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, Bhumihars were found to be the lightest-skinned caste in Bihar and Central to Eastern Uttar Pradesh. In other words, their MI (Melanin Index) is the lowest amongst all the castes found from Bihar to Central-East Uttar Pradesh.

Melanin Index measures skin complexion or pigmentation, lower Melanin index corresponds to lighter skin tone, or fairer complexion, while higher MI (Melanin Index) indicates presence of more melanin, therefore darker skin.

There are 2 research papers published so far, on the phenotype or MI (Melanin Index) of castes found in the Gangetic plains.

Given below is the table that was published in the research, containing the average MI (Melanin Index), Sample Size and Caste Category of castes from the Gangetic Plains. Sample size of most of the castes in this research is given in the table and seems sufficiently large enough to derive a broad yet reasonable conclusion.
